300Z Starter and Emissions.

Subject: 1990 300zx 2+2 starter.

Paul writes:.

Hi, I own a 1990 300zx 2+2 with 120,000 miles. About a year ago the starter started to grind and was replaced with a used rebuilt by a local mechanic in Fremont, CA. Since then, I have had two more installed (they have lasted about 4 months) and it's starting to happen again..

Should I go for another rebuilt, or a new one from Nissan, or have it installed by a Nissan garage or find another mechanic or get rid to the car or ??????????..

Second problem is the "Emission system warning light" keeps coming on at various times. But when it comes on, I take in on the freeway at 70-75 for a few miles and it goes out..

Third problem is the car feels like it is losing power. What steps should I take to determine what the problem is?.

I don't know how many questions I am allowed, but the starter problem is the most urgent. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me..

Sincerely, Paul Parhiala

Doc replies:.

Hi Paul,.

Doc here, you need to check the teeth on the flywheel (if it is a stick), or the flexplate (if it is an automatic) when the starter is removed. Any competent shop is capable of the repairs. The Nissan Dealer should have the qualified technicians to get the job done right the first time for you. You need to contact Rex Jennett for a competent dealer near you..

The emission light is telling you that there is a soft trouble code that is being saved by the computer, so there is something not major happening with some input sensor. The code thing can be retrieved by the dealer too and the service department can make the recommendations to you to clear the thing. Remember that if there is an O2 sensor code, replacing the sensor is
not necessarily going to fix it. This is an indicator that needs to be tested and then determined of it is truly the problem. Many times unknowledgeable mechanics just change the sensor instead of testing for proper operation. If the fuel filter has not been changed and is getting plugged it can let the O2 sensor sense a lean condition and trip a code. It is possible that this may clear up several of your problems, but without actually seeing the vehicle and testing the systems, solutions are Grace from God. This is just an example of some of the potential things that you can encounter..

Don't forget to give me aa follow up report so that I can pass it on to others who may be having the same problem. I hope that his gives you more knowledge to deal with the situation that you are experiencing. Let Wisdom be your Friend, and Knowledge your Ally!.

280Z Dies SudenlyTravis here(Zonc #98029), in Fresno. I have a problem with my 1977 280z which I can not figure out. It started today. Just driving down the road the car shut off, I disengaged the clutch and it started right back up. I drove it home only about a mile. Tonight I drove it to FSU and it shut off 3 times on the way there, while it was cold and running at temp. I just hooked up a test light to the fuel pump and drove the car. The light is inline with the pump so when the pump is getting power the light is on.
