Fuse Box Meltdown
Curt writes:.

My fuse box in my 71, 240 recently melted at the fuse of the running lights.
About 10 months ago I installed a new set of head lights that were more powerful than that of a stock set up but that is the only modification I have made to the elect. system in the last 2 or 3 years. Besides a short at the box is there any history of the z having to do with shorting out the fuse box?
As of now my car has been down for 7 weeks and I can not seem to locate any new parts for the car. I really am afraid to put an other 30 year old part in there. (besides I have not been able to locate one) Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks,
Curt

Hi Curt,.

Doc here, sorry to hear that you too are having this
problem. In the earlier Z's and all the family of old style vehicles that used the glass tube fuses there became a situation of the slight corrosion of the contacts squeezing
the sides of the fuses. Since it is easy to miss the poor contact, it would heat up due to the amperage flow and melt the plastic. The easiest remedy if to pull the fuse box and solder in a flat blade fuse holder and running the wires through the old holes with the contacts removed. The fuse that should do just fine is a 20 amp (yellow ) one and at this time also check all the other fuses.
To test them start the engine and turn on all system loads, and carefully feel the fuses. If one is starting to get warm then you need to clean the contacts and lightly spray something like WD 40 on the metal parts. Slight over spray
will not harm anything and the tail light circuit was the only really trouble culprit that I have seen over the years.
I hope that this helps you....

ZDOC OUT... :^).

280Z Dies SudenlyTravis here(Zonc #98029), in Fresno. I have a problem with my 1977 280z which I can not figure out. It started today. Just driving down the road the car shut off, I disengaged the clutch and it started right back up. I drove it home only about a mile. Tonight I drove it to FSU and it shut off 3 times on the way there, while it was cold and running at temp. I just hooked up a test light to the fuel pump and drove the car. The light is inline with the pump so when the pump is getting power the light is on.
