GM-HEI Conversion .

Rob writes:.

Doc,
.

I am converting my 78 Z coupe's HEI to the GM HEI and I have some wiring questions for any of you who have done this. I am using a Jacobs coil presently and I would like to eliminate the ballast resistor and wire the distributor to the HEI and the HEI to the coil. I am not sure the coil is an internal resistor type but I can check that through Jacobs. Can I wire it this way,or do I have to retain the ballast resistor?.

Thanks in advance.
Rob Sime.

Hi Rob,.

Doc here, You need to contact Dr. Jacobs about the specific type of coil that you are currently using to determine whether you need the ballast resistor or not..

The next question that I have to ask is the purpose to eliminate the original factory Trig Box? Did it go bad? Or are you just looking for something else? Don't forget that you must supply a tach signal to the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) so that the injectors will fire..

There is a guy up in Gary's neck of the woods named Kyle Hagemann (http://www.sonic.net/~kyle/ztech.html ..ed.) I believe. He has a wiring diagram for the conversion you are going to do. please remember that you need to use an aluminum plate to mount the module on with dielectric grease so that it will act as a heat sink. It
is a straight foreword job that you should have up and running quickly..

I hope that this helps you.................

280Z Dies SudenlyTravis here(Zonc #98029), in Fresno. I have a problem with my 1977 280z which I can not figure out. It started today. Just driving down the road the car shut off, I disengaged the clutch and it started right back up. I drove it home only about a mile. Tonight I drove it to FSU and it shut off 3 times on the way there, while it was cold and running at temp. I just hooked up a test light to the fuel pump and drove the car. The light is inline with the pump so when the pump is getting power the light is on.
