Is my Z PoZessed? .

Robert writes:.

Doc,.

Need help. I have a 71 240. Once I got the car back together about 2 years ago (didn't do engine work myself) I seemed to have my points collapse about every 100 miles or so. Not realizing this was the problem and having a mechanic end up rebuilding both carbs......still had problem....did some checking and decided to go with Crane EI to eliminate points. Car
ran perfect for about 2 months. Now I will drive it for about 10 miles and it will start "sputtering", almost like fuel filter problems. As long as I'm on the freeway at 60 mph it will work it self out. But as soon as I get off........she dies. After I let her sit for about 5 to 10
min. she will fire up and get me the rest of the way to where I'M going , provided it aint to much further..

The Car is usually a Spring and Weekend car, but I've been forced to put it into an everyday use for the next month, so I am really stuck here. Have so far:.

1) Changed Fuel Filter.

2) Ran gas dry and put new gas in.

3)Changed air filter.

4) Checked cap and rotor..

Any advice would be appreciated..

Thanx.

Bob .

Doc here,You sound like the problem is in the electrical feed to the ballast resistor, or in the pickup inside the distributor. Frequently the dist pickup will go open after heating up, and then work again after cooling off. If you can drive it after cooling off and it stops again at about the same time/distance then I would strongly suspect the dist pickup. Also check the voltage at the
connectors to the ballast resistor. Many times the electrical clip breaks inside the plastic boot and makes intermittent connections..

If you will give me the description of your distributor set-up I can help. That is, if you haven't fixed it with this information. I hope that this helps you..

280Z Dies SudenlyTravis here(Zonc #98029), in Fresno. I have a problem with my 1977 280z which I can not figure out. It started today. Just driving down the road the car shut off, I disengaged the clutch and it started right back up. I drove it home only about a mile. Tonight I drove it to FSU and it shut off 3 times on the way there, while it was cold and running at temp. I just hooked up a test light to the fuel pump and drove the car. The light is inline with the pump so when the pump is getting power the light is on.
