<>78 280Z Timing Chain Problems
. <>Z DOC. <>HELP!. <>I recently replaced the head gasket on my '76 280 Z. Now I need to put the timing chain and sprocket back on the camshaft. I wedged the chain so the tensioner wouldn't reset, like the Chiltons manual says to. I now have two problems:
1. After the valve job at the machine shop, the camshaft is abviously in a different position, and I
don't know how to line the sprocket and chain up so the timing is right??????
2. Even with the chain wedged, I think it may have reset, so my question, How far does the timing chain
have to slacken so the tensioner resets, and how can I tell if mine has reset???????. <>Thank you for your help.
Jason,
proud '76 280 Z owner . <>Doc replies:. <>Hi Jason,. <>Doc here, have you installed the head yet? Is it torqued? The dowel pin should be up at the twelve o'clock position and the camshaft sprocket on the (2) or middle hole with the crankshaft at zero. There should be a picture in your service manual if you have a good one for the finer points of the camshaft timing.. <>As far as the resetting...? There is no resetting of the tensioner if it falls out you will need to remove the oil pump and the timing cover to get all the parts back in order as a rule. I have been very successful with years of surgery to be able to return the tensioners back into their original position without removing the cover, but that is not an over the Net solution for you.. <>Are you a ZONC Member? "Thats what I get for going to Clutch-Mart" "Frosty" wrote Doc: "That is what I get for getting the job done at "Clutch Mart", And yes there is noise when the clutch is disengaged or the trans is in neutral. Any info will help." Read Doc's answer to Frosty and other Datsun enthusiasts who have sought his advise for the last couple decades on Doc's Tech pages.

280Z Dies SudenlyTravis here(Zonc #98029), in Fresno. I have a problem with my 1977 280z which I can not figure out. It started today. Just driving down the road the car shut off, I disengaged the clutch and it started right back up. I drove it home only about a mile. Tonight I drove it to FSU and it shut off 3 times on the way there, while it was cold and running at temp. I just hooked up a test light to the fuel pump and drove the car. The light is inline with the pump so when the pump is getting power the light is on.
