Dear Doc,
Just a quick question regarding the fuel pump on my '76 Z, it's loud. This the second '76 I've owned and I just don't remember the fuel pump being as loud as this one is. The warmer it is out side the louder the fuel pump humms. I always know if the turn indicators are working by listening to the fuel pump. Do I have a problem or am I just being overly aware.
On a related note, if the engine begins to cut out when I''m in the middle of passing another car, does this mean that the oil pump is getting weak?
Your thoughts would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks,

Hi Jimmy,
Doc here, it sounds like the EFI fuel pump is getting tired if it is sounding loud. This is my experience so I recommend that you replace it, since it is more than likely the source of the cutting out in the middle of a passing episode, too.
The symptoms are pretty evident and it is characteristic of the problem, that there is a diminished volume of fuel pressure when you are passing. The pump should produce 40 PSI fuel pressure as well as an increased volume too. I hope that this helps you........
